Strata Analytics Case Study: ADAM – Automated Diagnostic Image Delivery System

Cost Savings and Efficiency Boost in Result Storage, Retrieval, and Delivery

Context and Challenge

IndustryCore Solution
Healthcare / DiagnosticsDigital Enterprise Imaging (ADAM) and Patient Portal

The client is a Healthcare Center Specialized in Orthopedics and Traumatology, located in Colombia, with over 20 years of experience in treating traumatic injuries.

Its highly trained team is dedicated to providing high-quality medical care, utilizing the latest techniques and technologies in orthopedics and traumatology. Beyond that, the clinic offers precise diagnostics through advanced radiology and CT scanners, ensuring a comprehensive and effective approach to patient healthcare.

However, the Clinic faced critical challenges in the timely and effective delivery of medical test results, leading to operational bottlenecks and patient dissatisfaction.

  • Delayed Turnaround Times: Manual processes resulted in significant delays in delivering results, which can severely impact patient’s health
  • Operational Inefficiencies: Reliance on physical reports and diverse data formats hindered seamless information access.
  • Patient Dissatisfaction: Extended waiting periods negatively impacted the patient experience and trust.
  • Increased Costs: Printing and mailing physical copies added to operational expenses.

The core problem was the inefficient and costly manual delivery of medical test results.

Solution: Tailored Automated Diagnostic Image Delivery System

We implemented a solution integrating two key products to streamline the entire process, resulting in significant improvements in efficiency, cost savings, and patient satisfaction:

  • ADAM (Digital Enterprise Imaging):
    • Captured images directly from medical equipment in DICOM format: The DICOM Gateway (Phoenix V3), running as a Docker container on the clinic’s On-Premise Physical Machine, receives studies from the PACS via DICOM FORWARD and securely sends them to the Backend DAM in the cloud.
    • Paired images with written diagnoses: This data is centralized in the Backend DAM, which uses Amazon S3 as its central storage layer.
    • Tagged data using AI for efficient storage and access: The Backend DAM is responsible for Data Enrichment, processing assets to automatically extract key metadata and apply intelligent tags, which feeds a powerful search engine.
    • Serves as an intelligent data keeper and orchestrator: The Backend DAM acts as the brain of the solution in AWS , utilizing services like Amazon SQS (Simple Queue Service) to decouple itself from delivery services and notify via messages when a new asset is ready.
  • Titan PNM (Patient Notification Manager):
    • Orchestrates communication through email, text, and WhatsApp, ensuring the right message reaches the right person at the right time: For reliable and secure email delivery, Titan uses Amazon SES (Simple Email Service).
    • Everyone involved in the medical procedure knows what to do and when to do it.
    • Involved parties can easily sign and complete the required forms.
    • Finally sends the informed consent document to patients and involved parties for their records. This is handled by the PDF Generator microservice, which runs on Amazon ECS , taking templates and combining them with study data to produce a PDF file, which is saved to Amazon S3 and then delivered by Titan.
  • Mango Forms (Customized Microsite):
    • Customized as a dedicated microsite, blockchain-based, enabling patients to log in with a unique ID. The Patient Viewer and Frontend DAM applications are hosted on AWS Amplify.
    • Allowed patients to access their results from any device. Access to the Download Server is granted via a Websocket connection managed by API Gateway.
    • Incorporated an omnichannel communication system to deliver results, including email notifications with URLs and QR codes for easy access. The Download Server (EC2 Instance) orchestrates the final download by retrieving files from Amazon S3 and pushing the download URL to the Patient Viewer in real-time via the API Gateway Websocket connection.
